Golf Croquet Interclub Series

Masterton Croquet Club can’t quite find the form that led them to win last year’s Central Districts Golf Croquet Interclub series, and find themselves at the bottom of the table after losing their latest games against Levin at Queen Elizabeth Park on Thursday.

Golf Croquet is a quicker and less technical version of Association Croquet. “One of them is like playing drafts and the other one is like playing chess,” says club captain and umpire for the day, Russell Ward. “We have teams of four and each person plays two games of doubles and one game of singles.” He goes on to explain that basically the game involves players taking turns to be first to hit their (or their partner’s) ball through each hoop to score a point. The first team to seven points wins that game.

The home team won two of their four singles games but could only manage to win one of the four doubles matches, which left Levin the overall winner five points to three.

It is only Masterton’s second year in the competition. “Let year was our first year - and we won it, and this year we’re coming last!” says Russell. “Winning’s not everything as far as I’m concerned. We will have twelve interclub days during the course of the whole season and I would expect to use around twenty different players. It’s good to give other people a bit of a go.”
