Great season for Carterton AFC
I stopped to speak to Carterton AFC president JP Delamere as he prepared for a game at Howard Booth Park, about the club’s successful season in the Wairarapa competition. “Yeah, the mighty Redbacks won Division One, won the Wairarapa Cup, and won the Super League Trophy. The Raiders won Division Three, and the Royals were second in the women’s comp.” And the Reapers? “Yeah, they had a season!”
I wondered whether there was any prospect of the Redbacks moving up to compete in the regional Capital Football competition? JP is quick with an “Ah, no,” and then goes on “it’s about the culture, and the culture of that team is that they just want to play football with their mates…. and then have a beer after. Heaps of them have got families, kids and businesses and stuff so they don’t really want that commitment. They could do it. We’ve played themselves from over the hill and they’ve been competitive.”
Asked how he’d describe the club’s season overall, JP was also quick to reply: “We effing killed it!”
